As of today, Ziggo is offering superfast internet in one fell swoop to more than 39,000 households and business premises in Hengelo. Download speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second are possible in the municipality as of now. In total, Ziggo supplies more than 3,2 million Dutch households and companies with gigabit speeds with this newest connection. In the course of 2022, VodafoneZiggo will offer all customers access to a download speed of maximum 1 Gbps via the existing network.

In recent times, Ziggo’s network has been improved by smart technology. As a result, it wasn't necessary to dig up the street, but the TVs in the households continued working as normal. The 1 Gbp/s download speeds are therefore available with immediate effect. There are no waiting times or delays.

Ready for the future
"The rollout of super-fast internet in the Netherlands is entirely in line with VodafoneZiggo's ambition to prepare the Netherlands for the digital future," according to Jeroen Hoencamp, CEO of VodafoneZiggo: “Under the name GigaNet, the powerful network of Vodafone and Ziggo, we annually invest hundreds of millions in a stable, innovative and secure network. 'Gigabit without digging' is a key part of this. Thanks to all these investments to make our network 1 gigabit suitable, it’s not only customers who opt for the fastest internet speed that benefit. All connected customers also automatically benefit from a faster and more stable network connection without having to do anything."

Network investments
Last year, the cable network in Hengelo was technically prepared for gigabit internet. Ziggo technicians installed more than 63,510 new connectors at home connections and replaced more than 5,928 connection cables in more than 3,387 street cabinets. A total of more than 6 kilometres of new network cabling in street cabinets and local exchanges. As a result of all these innovations, Ziggo will switch on entire cities or regions at once, instead of high-speed internet being available on a street or neighbourhood basis.

97% signal via fibre optic cables
Ziggo's fixed network is a typical hybrid network that consists of fibre optic and coaxial cables. An average of 97% of the route taken by the internet signal from the data centre to a house connection runs through the Ziggo network via fibre optic cables. Only the last part, from the neighbourhood to the living room, goes via coaxial cable. Ziggo applies DOCSIS 3.1 technology to this coaxial part, which also allows fast internet speeds with a download speed of up to 1 Gbps. This technology ensures that speeds of up to 10 gigabits per second will become possible within a few years. Upload speeds will also increase over time. In April, VodafoneZiggo achieved a download speed of 10 gigabits per second on the existing fixed network during a test. At this speed, an average 4K movie of two hours' is downloaded in 10 seconds.

GIGA subscription
Ziggo's new 'GIGA' subscription includes: internet up to 1 Gbps download and 50 Mbps upload, the most comprehensive television channel package via the interactive Mediabox Next, Ziggo Movies & Series XL (Home or HBO), Ziggo Sport, Ziggo GO app and a fixed telephone connection.
