VodafoneZiggo has received official approval from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its submitted climate targets. This international validation confirms that VodafoneZiggo’s plans to reduce greenhouse gases and achieve Net Zero targets, meet strict scientific criteria.
To limit the global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius, rapid, thorough, and lasting reductions in emissions are necessary. The SBTi confirms now that VodafoneZiggo’s reduction targets align with what is required worldwide to combat critical climate change. These are near and long-term science-based emissions reduction targets. The SBTi has also verified VodafoneZiggo’s Net Zero science-based target by 2040. That means the climate targets are not only ambitious but scientifically tested and measurable.
In the short term, VodafoneZiggo aims to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 90 percent by 2030, compared to the base year 2018. The company will also continue to purchase 100 percent renewable electricity until at least 2030. For scope 3, covering emissions across the entire value chain, a reduction target of 50 percent has been set for this period. In the long term, VodafoneZiggo aims to maintain a minimum 90 percent reduction in absolute scope 1 and 2 emissions from 2030 to 2040, as well as continuing to source sustainable electricity up to and including 2040. The goal is also to reduce scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 90 percent by 2040.
Clear Reporting and Transparency
Wiebe Govers, ESG Manager at VodafoneZiggo: “This validation from SBTi shows that we take our responsibility seriously. VodafoneZiggo is working on a broad approach to sustainability, for example by electrifying our fleet and making shops and offices gas-free. Suppliers are also involved in reducing emissions. Customers mainly notice that products are becoming increasingly sustainable and energy efficient. In the coming years, we will continue to report clearly on progress towards our Net Zero targets, by publishing our carbon footprint and the percentage emission reduction compared to the baseline year annually in our Integrated Report.”
Now that the SBTi has approved the reduction targets, progress will be made public and checked annually. For VodafoneZiggo, this recognition is important to meet future legal requirements, remain competitive in a market where sustainability is increasingly important, and to help drive a sustainable telecom sector together with our suppliers.
