VodafoneZiggo was the first company in the world to conduct a Docsis 4.0 test over the live Ziggo network. With Docsis 4.0 and other network modifications, VodafoneZiggo expects network capacity to grow significantly. This network capacity will be made available to customers in the coming years.

"We consistently continue to invest in our networks in order to continue providing the best customer experience on both the mobile and fixed networks. VodafoneZiggo's fibre-optic cable network is future-proof anyway," says Eben Albertyn (Executive Director Technology).

At the end of 2022, VodafoneZiggo was the first provider to complete the immense task of being able to offer 1 Gbit/s internet nationwide.

"Customers increasingly want more reliable internet; they want to be connected to multiple devices at the same time, at home and on the go. The capacity of the network is so large that it is almost unimaginable what you can do with it. For example video streaming and gaming at home with several people at once, or being able to collaborate digitally in a large hospital with several departments, said Eben Albertyn.

"With the use of Docsis 4.0 in the network, we are going to provide even greater service reliability and more capacity, which will make even more bandwidth available for all internet and entertainment services on the network. Without the inconvenience as there is no need to dig up the street," says Leo-Geert van den Berg (Director Fixed Networks).

Nationwide network
VodafoneZiggo has over 40,000 km of fibre in the ground nationwide. Most of the distance travelled by internet data passes through this network. The final leg to the customer is via coax cable. VodafoneZiggo has been using DOCSIS technology for this for many years. Since 2019, the company has gradually introduced the latest Docsis 3.1 standard. Once connected, customers could opt for a Ziggo internet subscription with a download speed of 1 Gbit/s. With this Docsis 4.0 test, VodafoneZiggo shows that the network capacity will significantly increase in the years to come. Besides more capacity the entire network is now even more reliable.

Future-proof
For now, a speed of 1 Gbit/s is more than enough for most households. For example, 80 people can hold simultaneous meetings via MS Teams and 40 people can watch TV at the same time in 4K quality.

Test
The Docsis 4.0 test took place at the VodafoneZiggo TEC Campus in Amsterdam. VodafoneZiggo trains its technicians at this location and tests network innovations there. VodafoneZiggo was the first provider in the world to give a Docsis 4.0 demo over a live network.
